Becoming a Stowe Police Officer

Individuals interested in joining the Stowe Police Department as a full-time or part-time officer will proceed through the following steps:

1.  Submit a resume and cover letter explaining your interest in a position to Chief Kenneth Kaplan.

2.  Qualified candidates will be interviewed at the Stowe Police Department in Stowe.

3.  Any candidate must pass a background and character check as well as written, psychological, and physical training tests to meet standards established by the Vermont Criminal Justice Training Council.  All testing is conducted at the Vermont Police Academy in Pittsford, Vermont.  Details on testing and physical standards are posted at the VCJTC web site:
www.vcjtc.state.vt.us

4.  Full-time candidates who are hired are required to attend the 16-week Full-Time Academy.  However, applicants joining the Stowe Police Department from other full-time law enforcement agencies may receive a waiver.  Part-time candidates who are hired must attend the Part-Time Academy which covers the same materials as the Full-Time Academy, but on a compressed schedule.

5.  All new officers go through a Field Training period where they work with a Field Training Officer (FTO).  The Field Training process will prepare new officers with the basic skills needed to be out in the field.

7.  All officers receive continual training in areas ranging from first aid and CPR to firearms proficiency, tactics, officer safety, community relations, and dozens of other skills.  The learning will never stop for a Stowe police officer.

The Stowe Police Department is an equal-opportunity employer.
